How to Make Your Own Logo For Cheap or Free

Make Your Own Logo (1)

There are many ways to get around paying $500 for a designer to create your logo. If you couldn’t tell, I am a bootstrap kinda girl!

Don’t spend money you don’t have to get a logo. You can make your own logo that looks great! You can always have a professional polish it up when you start making money.

When I first started up my granola business I found a vector file that I could buy for like $20 and then just added the name of my business. Once I was more established and could afford it, I got some help to make it look better and more professional.

Learn How to Make Your Own Logo in a Class

CreativeLive offers some cool classes on logo design. If you are interested in creating your own logo from scratch it is worth getting some training. There is a lot more that goes into a logo than just putting some words and images together. A class will cost you less than paying a designer but make sure to check what type of software you will need to complete the work. In most cases, you will need something like Adobe InDesign but Canva is a great alternative. These classes go on sale often, so double-check the prices listed here.

Speaking of Canva, they have a great Design School with tons of video courses on different aspects of design.

Create a Custom Logo with Software

There are a few ways to do this, but be careful to do it lawfully! Don’t use a graphic or font that you don’t have a license for.

Canva – Free for personal use, $12.95 a month for business

You read that right! Now Canva lets you create your own logo, and even download it as a .png with transparent background. I love using Canva, it is super easy, even for beginners.

Tailor Brands – $24 for logo only, packages available

This company lets you enter your business name and answer a few questions then instantly creates a few logos for you to choose from and tweak.

I have tried it out a few times and it is pretty fun! I got frustrated at how few changes you could make, it seemed I never got something that was really perfect.

But for only $24 per logo and a variety of bundles to choose from, you might find it makes a perfectly fine logo for you.

Shopify Free Logo Maker – Yup, free!

They have templates you can use to design a logo in minutes.

Buy a Pre-Made Logo

There are lots of designers out there who make pre-made logos and will plug your business name into them when you buy.

These are not one-of-a-kind logos, a designer creates a logo and sells it to multiple businesses, changing only the name on the logo each time. This can be a great way to get a professional logo at a reasonable price.

There are a ton listed on places like Etsy. You can also look on places like Fiverr and UpWork, make sure to read the reviews on someone before hiring them!

Run a Contest

DesignContest is a pretty cool way to get a great logo. Sign up for an account and create your own contest. You set your reward amount and then sit back and let the submissions come to you. You can evaluate entries and score them or eliminate ones you are not considering.

Once you have picked a winner you can have the design signed over to you and pay the winner. Simple!

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box when you are first getting started. There are so many things to spend money on when you are building a business. Remember you can always update and change things later. You don’t need to spend a ton of money just to get working.

Did you make your own logo? I’d love to hear your story in the comments!

  1. Just went through this process for my website. I used a great, yet inexpensive graphic designer, who did 4 iterations of my logo. I’m glad I used someone else because although I consider myself to be creative, I am not proficient technically and the process would have taken me way too long!

    1. I made the one I am using now, but am in the process of working with a designer for a new “professional” one. I think it is nice to see if you like a business before investing too heavily in it. I am glad you got a logo you are happy with!

  2. What a great blog post! I re-branded earlier this year and my designer made a great logo for me, but I’m going to forward this to a friend of mien who was just telling me earlier today she wants to make her own logo! Thanks for the great info!

  3. This is a GREAT way to get a generic logo done…. well done misleading small business into becoming forgettable brands, it’s hilarious to think that with some classes or generic software will do the same as a professional with years of experience, when you pay someone to crate your brand you aren’t paying some random gay to “draw you a logo” you are paying for years of experience on brand development, let me put it this way: if this were a food blog what you are offering here would be the equivalent of saying a cup of instant noodle soup is the same as a pasta made by a chef but if you think a what you deserve is a noodle cup be my guest.

Pro tip: a REAL DESIGNER will never sell you just a logo he/she will sell you a project on your brand identity so your business becomes different and relevant.

Don’t be cheap when it come to your business or you’ll regret it later, you aren’t spending money you are investing it. Don’t think like a merchant. Think like a businessman

    1. Cesar, yes this is a great way to create a logo ON THE CHEAP. Not everyone can spend $500-1000 right off the bat for branding and logo design. Sometimes you need to make choices when you are starting a business, knowing that once you have cash flow you will do something different.
